14/12/2010 assange as sleight of hand
Julian Assange, Ben Laurie, Ms Jonsdottir, Wang Dan, and the rest were right to create Wikileaks.
I first started paying attention to it four years ago, at the suggestion of a librarian colleague. It’s a powerful tool, and it’s a shame that the personalities involved (mainly Assange’s) have overshadowed the project itself. The project itself can be criticized in a number of ways, and the strongest argument against it so far is that information in some leaked documents can be used to identify our “assets” in the field (putting their lives in danger — that’s the Pentagon’s position, anyway). And this is a strong and serious argument, but it only affects some specific documents, not the project of Wikileaks as a whole.
The project is a bit like a cork board — the project is the bulletin board and the thumb tacks, inviting anyone to anonymously tack up any note they want to. (This isn’t a perfect analogy because of the editorial control issues in Wikileaks — another strong point of criticism of the project, actually, that bleeds over into criticism of personalities again). They provide a medium, leakers leak the message.
Julian Assange may or may not be guilty of the charges against him — and even if he’s not guilty, he may still be hauled out and rendered to Quanitco or something just so the State Department and DoD can make a point about “free speech” and “state secrets”. But that’s just a bit of distraction from the project itself. It may have a (further) chilling effect on the project or on similar projects, but for the time being anyone can still anonymously submit any whistleblowing documentation that they wish through Wikileaks.
Assange (lauding or damning him) should not be the focus of serious people. Leave the Assange tabloid half-life to the media that want to control our gaze. The project itself is what matters, and our ability to think critically about its effects is more important than knee-jerk “nerd makes good” or “hacktivism/terrorism” blather.
There is a lack of seriousness in the Wikileaks “debate”. I hope that changes.
